Maureen Olson: PGA Director of Instruction
Maureen obtained her PGA Class A Membership in 2009, holds a Titleist Performance Institute Level 1 Certificate, and a National Academy of Sports Medicine Certificate. Maureen’s impressive career stops include: Carnoustie Golf Links in Scotland, Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina, Kansas City Country Club, Wilderness Ridge Golf Club in Nebraska, and Blue Hills Country Club in Kansas City.
Maureen doesn't believe in a perfect golf swing, she feels it is her job to help each individual find their own swing or improve upon what they already have and find a consistent movement which makes them the most successful at impact. She believes her knowledge of how the body functions sets her apart from other instructors, and knows how important functional movement patterns and fitness are in golf. Regardless of your physical needs, or golf experience, Maureen will help you find what works for you and hopefully you will have fun doing it!

JB Kim, Certified PGA
JB Kim, the only Certified PGA Instructor in the State of Kansas, has been teaching and coaching for over 16 years. He also holds a Titleist Performance Institue Level 2, both Golf Mechanics and Jr. Certificate. He is the Lead Golf Instructor at the Overland Park Golf Division. JB works with golfers of all skill levels, from players competing at the highest levels of professional, collegiate, and high school golf, as well as introducing new players to the game.
JB has seen two of his students ascend to play on the LPGA Tour, has been named a Top 50 Junior Golf Instructor by US Kids Golf, and is the Olathe School District’s SNAG (Starting New At Golf) instructor, teaching golf to students at area primary schools. Prior to his years as a PGA Professional, JB taught Martial Arts for five years, and holds a second level Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. "I do not believe in one way to swing a club. But I do believe there is one efficient way for every player to swing and it is based on what the player can do."
Liz Smart, LPGA
Liz has enjoyed a long, illustrious career with the game of golf. Liz began a LPGA career in 1987, earned her LPGA Professional Tour card in 1989, and even competed in the USGA US Women’s Open in 1991. Finally in 1997, Liz directed her career to her top desire: teaching golf.
Learning the game from local great Stan Thursk, Liz’s teaching approach is “student centered.” Liz explores each person’s ability and comprehension, while making each student feel comfortable and at ease while learning the game. Her students often comment that the enthusiasm and personality Liz incorporates into each class greatly enhances their experience.
Curt Nelson, Master PGA
Curt Nelson, General Manager of the Overland Park Golf Division, is one of the Region’s only PGA Master Professionals. His 32 years of experience includes being Head Professional at Loch Lloyd Country Club (1995-1998), St. Andrews Golf Club (1998-2011), and now General Manager of the Overland Park Golf Division.
Curt’s focus is keeping the swing simple by using lines, angles and circles. He often utilizes techniques learned at the David Leadbetter Academy, the John Jacobs Golf School, and his time at the Teaching Summit with one of the all-time great instructors, Manuel de la Torre.
Tony Roberts, PGA Head Professional
Tony has been a golf professional since the late 1970’s, breaking into the business with Landmark Land Company, working at their prestigious private clubs in La Quinta and Carmel Valley California. His career has taken him to Head Golf Professional positions in our area at WinterStone Golf Course in Independence and at the Greg Norman designed Stone Canyon in Blue Springs.
Tony has been Director of Instruction for the City of Kansas City, MO golf courses as well as Director of Golf for the Overland Park Golf Division. Tony was awarded the Midwest Section PGA Teacher of the Year in 2001, and as PGA Director of Instruction in 2014 he lead one of the Golf Division’s most successful instruction seasons ever. Now Tony brings his customer service expertise to St. Andrews Golf Club as the PGA Head Professional.
Michael Tanner, PGA Head Professional
Michael earned his PGA membership in 2010 after an already long career in the golf industry, which he began at age 16. Michael has competed at some of the highest levels of the sport while competing as a collegiate golfer for Johnson County Community College, and NCAA Division 1 University of Missouri – Kansas City.
As a regular competitor in the annual Watson Challenge, Michael has often been a fierce competitor, including a narrow second place finish in 2008 to Mr. Tom Watson himself. Now the PGA Head Professional at the Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club, Michael’s career stops in the Kansas City metro include Hallbrook Country Club, Shadow Glenn Country Club, Oakwood Country Club, and a long stint at Milburn Country Club. Michael enjoys teaching golfers of all types and skill levels.
Sean Chalk, PGA Apprentice
Sean Chalk moved to Overland Park, Kansas in 2000 from Fort Worth, Texas. His first job at 15 years old was at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club where he presently works as an Assistant Golf Professional. He is currently working towards PGA Membership and has attained Level 2 status as a PGA Apprentice. Although he received offers to play golf in college at Oklahoma Weslyen University, he chose to stay local and pursue Music at Johnson Country Community College while working part time at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club. Sean works mainly with youth golfers and believes in keeping the game/swing as simple as possible.
Jennifer Clark: PGA Apprentice, St. Andrews Golf Club
Jennifer is the 2016 Midwest PGA Section Award Winner for Apprentice/Assistant of the Year!
Jennifer started the game of golf at the young age of two years old, and has been dedicated to the game ever since. She has experience as Junior Golf Instructor at Sunflower Hills Golf Course (2008-2011) and recently worked at Eagle Bend Golf Course. Currently in the process of becoming a PGA Member, Jennifer played collegiate golf on scholarship for the University of Kansas. In addition to her numerous playing achievements, Jennifer was highly influenced by her father, a PGA professional himself. Jennifer believes in learning why her students play golf and making sure they continue to enjoy the sport. Her focus is to give students a solid foundation and help progress their game by finding what works best for them. She has a passion for teaching short game and often uses Vision54 philosophies and drills she learned at KU for her teaching.
Tyson Spratt, PGA Apprentice
Tyson Spratt moved to Overland Park from Fort Collins, Colorado just last year. Tyson previously worked at Fox Hill Country Club and Mariana Butte Golf Course as an Assistant Golf Professional. He attended Colorado State University where he received his Bachelor's in History. He is currently in the PGA Apprentice Program in Level 1. His philosophy is to work from the ground up and build your swing on a solid foundation of a good grip, stance and posture. He likes to teach all the phases of the game to anyone who wants to learn!
Danny Murphy, PGA Apprentice
Danny started playing the game of golf at the age of seven. His Grandfather taught him how to play and didn’t really start playing competitively until attending St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He worked at Sykes/Lady Overland Park Golf Club from 2007-2010 before transferring to the University of Central Oklahoma for PGA Golf Management. His experience has varied in golf positions held at Blue Hills Country Club, and for the PGA Tour at TPC Boston and TPC Louisiana. He is very close to finishing his PGA Membership. His philosophy for the golf swing starts with the fundamentals but really stresses path, smooth transition and a good swing through. Building a sound golf swing that works for you is very important. His passion and excitement to learn and teach the game is shown during his lessons. He also loves giving short games lessons.
